Interview with fashion specialist Duke Winn

Welcome Mr Winn, we are very excited to have you today and discuss about your work. Who is Duke Winn and how did his passion for filmmaking start?

Thank you for the interview. I'm Duke Winn, born and raised in Viet Nam then moved to America 10 years ago. I started working in graphic design and fashion photography, then explored myself more in different fields of creativity. My filmmaking started along with fashion photography, from making behind the scenes videos, to produced and filming fashion commercials, and then in 2021 I officially started my own production company "MOT Pictures", focused more into film and documentary, training new photographers, videographers during workshops and event for creators.

Can you tell us about your previous work?

My previous film works mostly focused in fashion videos, started with behind the scenes videos of fashion photoshoots for brands as Marc Bouwer, Peter Do, Samsung, Cong Tri, Carmen Marc Valvo, Bach Mai, and magazine as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel, also New York Fashion Week. Recently I worked with Miss Universe Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu making fashion videos for L'Officiel India, and May 2022 I filmed the documentary of Peter Do for MET Gala 2022.

September 2022, I made a short documentary about Peter Do fashion show during New York Fashion Week and the video got over 100k views on youtube https://youtu.be/swR05B8XbHM .

CONVERSATION ABOUT: PETER DO - MET GALA 2022

What would you describe as your documentary art style ?

My documentary art style is reflecting the reality through the eyes of film maker, bring the beauty of life into the screen, tell the real stories with viewers, share inspiration, motivation and experiences with audience.

Talk to us about your film? How was it created and what inspired it?

Few months before MET Gala, Peter Do team contacted me to working with them to capture the process of making the clothes for the MET Gala. I was lucky and grateful to had a chance to work with talented designer and amazing team, seeing their hard work and creatives, from start to finish, from day 1 of fitting to the MET Gala day. I had a chance to work with Eva Chen - The director of fashion at Instagram and the K-Pop Music Star Johnny Suh.

How is it working with music superstars ?
Working with Music Superstar Johnny Suh and his team was great experience to me. They are professional, talented and super nice and friendly to work with. 

What is it like filming the overall atmosphere before an important event ?

I felt pressure to filming the important event - the biggest project in my film career. It was great challenge to me to capture all the great moments in the tight timing, I try my best to bring the energy, the feeling, the atmosphere to the screen and to share to the audience.

FUTURE WORK AND CLOSING LETTER

What is the target audience of your project ?

My target audience of this project is fashion lovers, who are in love with creative and the beauty of the process of fashion.


What is the message the audience should convey leaving the screening of your film ? 

I wanted to share the passion, motivation and positive energy to inspire new creators, not only in film or fashion, but also in all creative fields to keep follow your dreams, work hard and making your dreams come true. 


Any future projects incoming ? Along with personal aspirations.

I am working on the upcoming documentary about Vietnamese in New York. People mostly know about Vietnamese culture through food, through stories about Vietnam war,... and I want to change that, to share more different stories about Vietnamese people and Vietnamese culture. My next documentary is about Vietnamese who working in fashion, tech, finance, beauty, art, film,... in New York with different lifestyles and experiences about New York life. My plan this year is introducing the short documentary "New York Tết Stories" - will be screened in New York this January 2022 in Lunar New Year, and the documentary series "Vietnamese in New York" in this Summer 2023.
