Interview with Ekaterina Chatski
Can you tell us about your previous work along with your impressive educational pathway on the subject ?
My previous work was strengthened during the COVID times. I lost personal connection with my students and radio listeners. The solution I found was through audiovisuals. Almost all of them combine various arts: music (which is my profession), literature (which is my daily bread), and cinema (which is my passion).
CONVERSATION ABOUT: ETERNITY
Talk to us about your film? How was it created and what inspired it?
There are two major inspirations: Johann Sebastian Bach's prelude, whIch has accompanied me throughout my life as a musician, and Jorge Luis Borges´text:
“History of Eternity”. I was able to express these inspirations through a story about a leaf from a tree from my garden (ones on my favorites): AVOCADO.
Talk to us about the hidden symbolism in your work.
The word "hoja" (leaf) is the metaphor that finds its eternity between a tree and a "hoja" (sheet) of musical notation that comes to life through an interpreter: the pianist.
What would you describe as your directing identity style ? What can you tell us about the unique palette used at the cinematography department ?
My style combines several elements: one of them is classical music, which you can read, understand its meaning, and interpret the scores. Cinema helps me communicate this musical message through images developed over time. Additionally, I enjoy using poly-stylistic techniques, including stop-motion, to create a fusion of various artistic expressions: music, literature and cinema.
What is the purpose of your work ?
The purpose of my work is to communicate a hidden message within a musical score.
What is the target audience of your project ?
The audience for my project is very similar to my audience for radio programs at Radio Universidad de Costa Rica: it consists of people who are open to aesthetic beauty, poetry, and art.
What is the message the audience should convey leaving the screening of your film ?
To enjoy the fragility of a moment, just like in the poetry of William Blake (1757-1827):
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.
Any future projects incoming ? Along with personal aspirations.
At this moment, I am working on a short film titled "24," portraying the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. It will be a 5-minute animation using the Stopmotion technique. It is dedicated to my people.
I thank the AIMAFF team for their kindness and for conducting this interview.
I hope to participate in future competitions.
