Review for ‘‘Decisions’’ by Meletis Fourountzidis

''Decisions'' by Meletis Fourountzidis is a quarantine short film that dives into human psychology. Our characters are forced to survive in conditions of severe isolation while being productive in an overworking burnout environment. This original script gives a different twist in your typical covid film scenario. Each dialogue feels realistic, snappy and useful. Although this works as a disadvantage to the characters which feel unlikeable and materialistic.

First time director Meletis Fourountzidis plays safe without providing any extraordinary or creative scenery. Simplicity is the key as he succeeds in telling a story in a way that you never get lost. The pacing is great and the 29 minutes duration feels like a breeze. The cinematography is very atmospheric but leaves a lot to be desired in the color correction department. The editing is magnificent and even provides some match cuts that caught us by surprise, this does not translate to the sound design that contains some major issues. From a production design point, we were captivated by the exterior shooting footage especially when we got to witness a commerical ship location. This pointed to the lack of production design on one of the most important locations of the film. The house, which feels lifeless with empty plain white walls.

From a storytelling aspect, this is a great first attempt at filmmaking and the only major issues are technical details. Most importantly, the story was told entertainingly, was made clear and contained some very positive and optimistic messages. We await to see what's next for director Meletis Fourountzidis.
